We are well into winter, and polar vortex season, so I’ve been doubling down on my “nesting” activities lately. Softening surfaces, picking up a few new warm sweaters, ordering a heated blanket, and making my home the perfect place to get through the coldest days of winter, and prepare my apartment for spring and summer hosting season.
One of the few things I am almost guaranteed to pick up this time of year is candles. Something about a scented candle can make a space feel extra comforting and warm, especially on those perfect, snowy Sundays.
But, if you’re like me, many of the affordable scented candles end up irritating your lungs, posing a risk to your pets due to burning essential oils in the candles, and can leave you feeling like you have to make health sacrifices for the sake of a cozy home.
No scented candle is worth risking your health or your pet’s health.
With that in mind, I’d like to introduce you to Aera (air-uh), a home scent system that has been specifically designed to allow you to control the level of scent in the home with scents that are non-toxic to humans, and offer a selection of scents that are safe for pets!
I’ve recently gotten my hands on the Aera fragrance system and some sweater-weather-worthy scents and want to share my experience with you here so you too can be freed from cheap, clawing scented candles, and you can have the home that not only smells great, but that you can also enjoy with your friends, family, and pets without worrying about harmful chemicals.
Aera’s Story
Aera was launched back in 2016 by its parent company, Prolitec, as a consumer-facing option for people like me and you to enjoy the scent-experience that high-end hotels and businesses have offered their guests and customers.
The technology they developed for businesses was scaled down to meet the needs of people looking to make their environment smell as luxurious, warm, inviting, or fresh as they wish and to match the rest of the living space that they’ve curated.
Their diffusers have been designed to release the scent in no more than 10 parts per million (ppm), so it can easily diffuse in the air without leaving any residue on nearby surfaces. You also have full control over the intensity of the scent with their fragrance system and control everything in the Aera app.

Aera, as with Prolitec, has committed to working with fragrance partner, dsm-firmenich, to develop a wide variety of fragrances to suit every mood, season, and vibe that you are looking to create in your home through the power of scent.
What I also love is that they’ve committed to a sustainable, responsible process of developing scents that are, as mentioned above, non-toxic to humans and pets with the use of clean, renewable and biodegradable ingredients.
Aera now has over 125 scent options, from scents that match a mood, to collaborations with other comfort-curators like Cariloha, to collections that bring you to a dream destination. There are so many scents to discover. So let’s get into the products I tried and my recommendations if you’d like to also upgrade your scent game at home.
Aera Fragrance System (Diffuser)
To fill my entire apartment with the lovely Aera fragrances, the full-size Aera diffuser was the way to go. This diffuser has patented technology so that the fragrance spreads around the space evenly, and you don’t end up with a highly perfume-y living room, while your entryway is left with just a whisper of scent.
After taking the fragrance system, 3 scents, and free scent samples (a nice surprise!) out of the box, I plugged in the diffuser and found it very easy to install the fragrance. You simply remove the red tab from the top of the fragrance, then remove the white tab from the bottom and place it into the diffuser.
This is a pretty advanced piece of technology but so easy to use. When you place the fragrance in the diffuser, you hit the play/pause button and it will automatically lower the fragrance into the unit and begin dispersing the scent.
I’ve kept mine on the lowest setting possible and on my bedside so that every time I walk into my room, I am instantly relaxed when I experience the fresh scent of vanilla, or sandalwood, or lavender.
The best part is that the fragrances last for up to 600hrs, which is unheard of in the candle world. I remember getting a candle from a friend that was supposed to be 100hr candle, which you’d think would last me a long time. But as a girl who loves a bath in the colder months, complete with a cozy candle, I was finished with that in 2 weeks.
With this diffuser and the full-size scents, I am getting 12x the hours as the most popular scented, soy candle that you can get on Amazon.
Check the price of the Aera Home Fragrance system here.
Luckily, if you sign up with your email, you’ll get 20% off your diffuser, which brings the cost down and basically makes your shipping free if you are shipping to Canada.
If you’d like to try out a smaller diffuser or don’t have a 1000 sq.ft. space to fill with fragrance, they also offer a mini diffuser. This diffuser is great for spaces that are around 400 sq.ft. and you still get up to 600 hours of “gorgeously good home fragrance”.
Another fun thing – the mini diffuser comes in 3 different colours, so you can match your diffuser to your style. You can choose from white, terracotta, or forest green.

But wait – there’s more!
If you want to continue your scent story into your car, then Aera also has you covered with their Aera Go. This diffuser plugs into the car’s USB power source and offers 450 hrs of clean, evenly distributed, and hypoallergenic fragrance.

Once you’re all set with your diffuser, it’s time to choose your fragrances.
Aera Fragrances
As I mentioned, Aera has over 120 fragrances listed on their site. The full-size fragrances are USD $60 (10 cents/hour if you’re girl-mathing this), or 2x the price of a popular scented soy candle for 12x the hours of your home smelling fresh. The mini fragrances retail for USD $30. If you opt for a subscription, the cost of the large fragrance is USD $51, and the small fragrance is USD $25.50.
You can pick your scents based on mood, collaboration, collection, strength, and scent family (woody, floral, fresh, etc.).
I decided to try the Vanilla, Soft Pants and Pillow Plans (love the names). I typically lean more gourmand when I wear perfumes, but I wanted to try Pillow Plans as well to see if I could make my sleeping sanctuary even more of a haven for a perfectly designed good night’s sleep.
I also received a ton of samples, which arrived in beautiful little Aera pouches. I love this because it helps me explore new scents I may have never considered. So far, I am loving Linen as a sample scent and think I’ll be trying that one out when I restock!
Something that I loved while perusing the site was that their product pages are not just for telling you what it is and how much it costs and some reviews. They’ve gone the extra mile to include the principal perfumer who developed the scent, the top notes, heart notes, base notes, and intensity, and a final section on ethics and sustainability. These things matter, and I really appreciate when a company takes the time to highlight the artists who make their products, and how they’ve been intentional in how they sourced their ingredients.

After trying all 3, I think my favourite is Pillow Plans, but they were all such a nice experience. It revived my space and I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I have over 1,800 hours of gorgeously good home fragrances! That’s 75 days and will carry me all the way through winter and in spring.
How do Aera Fragrances Fit into a Healthy Lifestyle
You may be wondering why I am going on and on about a fragrance company. Which is fair. The link between a healthy lifestyle and a nice-smelling home is not totally obvious, but I promise there is an important link here.
Going to the gym or doing your workout is about 1-2 hours of your day, 3 to, maybe, 5 times a week. The rest of that time, you’re living your life; going to work, having friends over, and enjoying quiet moments at home. In those moments when you are in your space that you’ve worked so hard to design in every other way through furniture, decor, and lighting, why wouldn’t you want to treat all the senses to a positive experience?
Think about when you’ve made a really delicious meal or just finished some baking. The way your home smells has an impact on your overall mood and how you experience your home.
Now think if you had a system that was non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and curated – by you – to have that experience all the time. The impact on your mood and stress levels would be noticeable. Not to mention, having scents like lavender in your bedroom can improve the quality of your sleep, which is always a good thing.
And I believe that pursuing a healthy lifestyle is pursuing health, happiness, and fulfillment, not just in the gym, but in all areas of your life. And with Aera Home Fragrances you can do all of this while also enjoying the peace of mind that the scents are non-toxic to your pets!
Aera for Pets
This is truly one of the only solutions I’ve ever come across that takes into consideration our pets. Candles and incense sticks are great, but most of the time, they are toxic to dogs and cats, so they aren’t a responsible thing to have around the house.
Aera has designed their pet-safe scents with OdorOut, which makes the scents hypoallergenic for dogs and cats, while also having enough scent power to refresh your space and eliminate some of the unpleasant smells that cats and dogs can leave around the home.
In their pet-sage collection, you can choose from 4 fresh scents.

Though not the broad 120 scent collection, I still appreciate that Aera has taken the time to develop scents for pet owners. As an occasional dog-sitter and someone who is always asking my sisters to bring their dogs to my place when they visit, I want to be able to create a cozy vibe at home without putting the dogs at risk.
These solve that, and I’m so grateful that they have given us these options.
I’m really happy with my experience with the Aera Home Fragrance system so far. It’s a really great feeling knowing that I can not only make my apartment smell nice for guests, but that I have a high-quality, hypoallergenic system that will make my self-care time and my sleep more luxurious.
Check out Aera Home Fragrance and their wide variety of diffusers and scents and let me know what you think! What fragrances catch your eye and how do you plan to make your home smell gorgeously good?
